Turn your invention into a Tullamore show-stopper

Popular Farming Independent inventions competition returns to County Offaly next month and offers serial innovators and students the opportunity to showcase their brightest ideas

Just around the corner is this year's Tullamore Show which is being held on Sunday, August 12 just outside of Tullamore, Co Offaly.

Incorporating the AIB National Livestock Show, this is truly a family event, but one section which always draws a crowd is the inventions competition. A total of €2,000 in prize money is provided by three sponsors, the Farming Independent, WR Shaw, Rosenallis, Co Laois, and Glenngorey Pumps Ltd, Newbridge, Co Kildare.

Headed up by Rodney Cox and his crew, the competition draws out the curiosity and inventor in every one of us, and is a must-visit at the Tullamore event.

Last year, there were around 60 entries, which organisers say was the largest number since the competition began.

This year promises to be no different. As we struggle with our current economic situation, many look for a way out through developing their ideas and showcasing them at events such as this.

Speaking to Mr Cox about this year's event, he is confident of an even bigger entry this year. "Last year we moved the judging of the inventions competition to Saturday, which is the day before the actual show. This was to facilitate the judges to get around and judge the inventions, because the previous year, the crowds were just too much.

"This year there is huge interest and enquiries from students in the inventions competition and at a level which we haven't had before either.

"We have always been chiselling away at the student sector, both second and third level, trying to encourage them to enter the competition."

For this reason, there is now a student category in each one of the competition classes, according to Rodney.

Another addition last year was the presence of a very helpful team from the patents office in Kilkenny. They will be at the event again this year to answer any queries from budding inventors.

So if you think you have invented 'the next big thing' or even little thing, why not bring it to the Tullamore Show this August? As Rodney explains: "The inventions competition is an ideal event to showcase your invention and ideas, and to bring it onto the market."

For advice on your invention, you can contact Rodney Cox on 086 8403836 or the Patents Office in Kilkenny on 1890 220223. Just remember, your invention will need patent protection before going out in public if it is something that you are serious about marketing.
