Tracked gear key for tough jobs
Donal Reidy, from Maglass, Ballymacelligott outside Tralee, provides a lot of the specialist gear required by farmers in the area who are undertaking serious drainage work.
Key in his arsenal of gear is a 155hp tracked machine that is able to pull a pan-buster at a depth of 60cm.
"A 200hp tractor would pull it too, but not where you'd need it being pulled, like the soft and wet areas," said Mr Reidy.
The four-legged buster and tracked machine cost €80/hr to hire. Mr Reidy also provides a mole drainer with a hopper for gravel. It costs €50/hr, although the amount of ground covered by the machine per hour can vary greatly depending on the job, he explained.
"It all depends on how much stone you're putting into the channel. The mole bullet is only four inches wide itself, but the depth of stone that you apply above the mole can vary from 20cm to 40cm.
"If you're using a lot of stone, it becomes time consuming keeping the stoning cart stocked up with enough stone to keep the operation going," said Mr Reidy.
The stoning cart costs another €2.50/t of stone. This price includes the cost of a loader to fill the cart. None of these quotes include VAT.
