Ten seminars on alternative farm enterprise

A nationwide series of 10 Options seminars have been organised in the Teagasc advisory areas around the country to allow farm families to explore possible alternative enterprises for their own farm.

Maria Heneghan, Teagasc Rural Tourism Specialist, said the programme is designed to help farm families address difficulties such as reduced incomes and unemployment.

"Good management is the skill of making things happen rather that letting things happen, so planning for a future in farming is the core aim of the Options Programme," said Ms Heneghan.

Attendees will be introduced to a new farm household income ready-reckoner which is designed to give a picture of the farm family income and help assess the potential of the farm and the family to pursue the many possible options to generate more income and create a viable and attractive future for a successor on the farm.

Teagasc advisers and specialists, together with representatives from other agencies such as LEADER, County Enterprise Boards, Fás and the VEC, will be present at each of the seminars.
