Strong trade speaks for itself with cull cows are making up to e2.40/kg

When good cull cows are making up to €2.40/kg around the country, the trade speaks for itself. Quality stores and weanlings as well as any finished stock strengthened on an already very strong trade.

Add in good continental sucklers with a calf at foot making €2,000-2,300 and Continental bull suck calves selling for up to €515 with strong Friesian sucks hitting a high of €420, and you have got a lively week at ringside.

Good quality young bulls as well as heifers and well-fleshed cows were the best of the sellers out of the 360hd of stock on offer at Ballinakill Mart. Heavy steers sold from €2.05-2.81/kg. Forward stores moved at €2.00-2.95/kg with the light stores making from €2.25-3.25/kg. Weanling bulls made €2.40-3.30/kg. Beef heifers were selling for €2.15-2.60/kg. The stores sold for €2.00-2.45/kg while weanling heifers made from €1.85-2.55/kg. Depending on condition and breed, the cull cows ranged from €1.30-2.10/kg.

Lively shipper and farmer buying at Ennis Mart resulted in the good weanling bulls between 300-350kg making in excess of €3/kg. The well-fleshed Continental cull cows were almost making as much per kg as the heavy steers, in a range of €2.00-2.20/kg. Heavy heifers fit for slaughter were selling from €2.00-2.31/kg, while the sucklers made up to €1,880.

The best of the heavy bulls over 600kg were selling for €705-1,470 with their weight up in Raphoe. Store bullocks made from €425-835 over. Beef heifers sold for €595-1,045 with the €/kg while the stores ranged from €350-805 over. Top quality heavy cull cows made up to €2,120 with plainer types for further feeding selling back to €700 each.

The trade was steady at Dowra Mart last Saturday with the forward store bullocks making from €2.20-2.60/kg. Lighter lots made from €2.00-2.80/kg. Weanling bulls over 450kg sold from €2.20-2.80/kg. The lighter bulls were selling for €2.40-3.40/kg. Forward heifers over 450kg made from €2.00-2.80 while the weanling heifers sold from €2.40-3.30/kg. Cull cows ranged from €1.90-2.40/kg for the best lots while older cows made from €1.40-1.80/kg. Cows with a calf at foot made from €1,600-2,050 with the older outfits making from €1,200-1,600/unit.

The 570 cattle on offer at Kilkenny Mart met with a flying trade. Well-fleshed steers and heifers were up by €20-30/hd.Those beef bullocks were making €2.20-2.50/kg. Forward Continental steers made from €2.40-2.70/kg, while lighter lots moved at €2.45-3.00/kg. Friesians sold to €2.34/kg. Beef heifers made from €2.00-2.57/kg with a few top quality lots making up to €2.82/kg. Butcher types and stores ran from €2.10-2.70/kg in the main. Prices for the Continental cull cows ranged from €1.70-2.20/kg while the Friesian culls made €1.20-2.00/kg. Suckler cows with a calf at foot were making from €1,200-2,220.

Enniscorthy Mart reported a continuing strong trade with the beef bullocks making from €705-1,075 over the weight. Stores made from €300-1,060 over. Beef and butcher heifers sold for €740-1,080 with the €/kg. Stores made from €360-900 over. Heavy bull weanlings sold for prices of €1,180-1,500 each or €800-1,000 over while the lighter types made €800-1,150 or €800-1,000 with their weight. Prices for cull cows ran from €750-1,700.

Trade for the 150 suck calves was also lively with the Continental bull calves selling for €360-515. The heifers were making from €240-500. Friesian bulls made from €130-420. Hereford and Angus bulls and heifers sold from €200-450.

Balla Mart had 905 lots of cattle on offer. Quality stock made over the €3.00/kg and were up €320/hd on the corresponding sale last year, but plainer lots were harder to sell. Heavy bullocks were making from €1.84-3.19/kg while lighter types made from €1.57-3.24/kg. The better heavy heifers on offer made from €2.02-3.03/kg. Forward store heifers made from €2.14-3.33/kg. Sucklers with a calf topped out at €2,040 while the best of the cull cows hit a high of €2,365.

Weanlings were a good trade with the majority of light bulls making over the €3.00/kg or €800 with the weight.

A strong trade was the story for the 950 cattle at Carnew Mart. Beef and forward store bullocks made from €750-1,250 over their weight. Light stores sold for €380-1,030 over. The good weanling bulls made up to €1,100 with the €/kg. Beef heifers were making from €650-1,080 over their weight while the stores sold form €380-930 over. Fat cull cows made up to €1,020 over the weight. Feeders sold back to €350 over.

At Ballymote Mart, the heavy stores were making from €550-700 with their weight. Lighter stores made from €450-700 over. The heifers sold for €400-570 over the €/kg. Weanling heifers made €325-560 over while the bulls sold for €420-725 with the weight. Cull cows ranged from €600-865 over the €/kg.
