Strong farmer buying keeps floor on trade

Sheep marts

Joe Healy

Strong farmer buying for light and forward store lambs, ewe lambs, breeding ewes and hoggets ensured another good week for the marts.

The level of farmer interest in forward store lambs is putting pressure on factories to get adequate numbers, with a lot of lambs up to 44-45kg being bought by farmers to feed on to 52kg or more.

A top of €255 was paid for ewe hoggets, with up to €180 reported for breeding ewes and €155 for ewe lambs. Heavy, fat cull ewes sold for €100-135. Factory and butcher lambs made €48-68 over the €/kg.

Quality lambs made €59-68 over at Athenry Mart yesterday, as other lambs over 46kg sold for €50-58 over. Stores made €44-58 with the weight.

Athenry's annual breeding ewe show and sale takes place next Monday.

Lambs in Fermoy sold for €48-61 over.

Trade was steady at Enniscorthy Mart, with the best of the demand being for the breeding ewes and rams. Ewe hoggets sold to a top price of €215, with a range back to €177.

Heavy lambs made €47-60 over the weight and sold for €95-110. Factory types made €46-55 over and stores sold for €75-91/hd. Fat cull ewes made €95-130, while store culls sold for €40-88.
