Solid mart trade for lambs despite pressure

Despite factory pressure to the contrary, trade at the marts for lambs was reported as solid to improved over the past week with a number of outlets showing prices up by €2-5/hd.

Factory lambs generally sold for €42-55 over the weight with stores making €38-50 over. Strong ewe lambs were making up to €80 with their weight. The best of the ewe hoggets made up to and over €200, while older breeding ewes ranged from €100-170 depending on age and quality. Culls for feeding sold from €40 up, while well-fleshed ewes sold for up to and in excess of €100. Breeding rams were making €350-600 for the fairly decent stock. A big sale of 500 lambs at Fermoy Mart yesterday met with a lively trade for the finished lamb. Quite a few of the good lambs over 50kg made €50-64 over the €/kg, with the 40-50kg lots selling for €42-50 over.

In Athenry, the heavier types were making €47-55 over the weight. Lighter lambs of 36-43kg were selling for €41-51 over.

Tullow Mart had 2,770 sheep on offer and reported a solid trade for fat lambs, which sold for €49-61 or €93-108/hd. Stores were up €2-3/hd and sold for €30-50 over their weight to a top of €80/hd. There was very good demand for nice lean wether lambs. The best of the ewe lambs sold for €150, with the general run making €50-90 over the €/kg. Ewe hoggets made €150-200 while older breeders sold for €120-170. Culls made €45-112 each.

There was strong demand for factory lambs, with increased demand for quality lots of store lambs and ewe lambs at Mountbellew Mart. Breeding ewes and ewe hoggets were a slightly easier trade. Cull ewes were a similar trade to the previous week at €68-108/hd. Ewe lambs moved at €100-120.

Butcher and factory lambs made €42-52 with the €/kg. Store prices ranged from €75-94. First-crop ewes for breeding made €145-176, while second crops sold for €130-168 with older lots making €85-111. Ewe hoggets sold for €134-208.

Enniscorthy Mart had 2,500 sheep at its sale. Prices for both butcher and factory lambs were similar to the previous week but the stores were up by €2-5/hd and sold for €75-88 or €44-52 with the €/kg. Ewe lambs met with a lively demand and made €104-130 or €50-80 over. Butcher lambs sold for €45-55 over in a price bracket of €96-105. Factory types ran from €85-95 each. Heavy cull ewes made €92-110, while feeders moved from €47-88/hd. Texel rams at the pedigree sale sold for €320-400. Charolais rams made €350-565, while Suffolk rams sold for €340-650/hd.

There were 3,800 sheep on offer at Carnew, with improved demand for factory and store lambs resulting in prices up by €3/hd. The stores sold from €38-51 over the weight.
