Small boost for pig men

Desperate pig producers have welcomed a 4c/kg rise in pig prices paid on Friday but insist that the new average price of €1.50/kg still amounts to a loss of around €12/pig.

IFA pigs chairman Tim Cullinan said producers would continue their campaign to highlight pigmeat imports that were displacing part of the market for Irish pigmeat at a time when Irish pig farmers are in crisis.

Approximately 74,400t of pigmeat was imported into Ireland last year, according to the IFA, much of which was distributed to butchers and the foodservice sector.
