Shorthorn cows win co-op gong

A herd of 35 dairy Shorthorn cows that has earned their share of admirers and rosettes in the show rings has added another accolade.

The Arrabawn Co-Op Quality Milk Award 2014 winner in the under 250,000 litre category has been presented to John Fox, Oranmore, Co Galway.

Mr Fox milks 35 Shorthorn cows with an average yield of 6,000l per cow on his 34ha farm.

The Shorthorn herd has been winner of numerous awards at agricultural shows in recent years.

The overall winner of the Arrabawn Co-op Quality Milk Award 2014, was Eoin Toohey, Cullenwaine, Moneygall, who also topped the over 250,000 litre category.

He farms 91ha with 113 Friesian cows with an average yield of 5,500l per cow.

Presenting the award, Arrabawn's Conor Ryan said both winners were "top-class examples of dairy farmers who get the basics right by paying attention to detail".
