Gardai are pursuing a prosecution following a recent dog attack on sheep in Co Offaly.
They have issued a warning to all dog owners following the death of number of sheep in the west of the county.
Gardai said around seven seven sheep were killed in the incident and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Dog owners are being warned that they have responsibilities in relation to the control of their dogs in the lead up to lambing season.
Gardai issued a graphic picture of the aftermath of a sheep attack to illustrate the damage dogs can inflict on livestock.
Offaly IFA Chairman John Keena added his voice to the warning. Mr Keena said it dog attacks are always a concern at this time of the year. He explained that aside from the animals that die or are maimed, a dog attack causes harm to the entire flock.
According to Offaly IFA's Enda Bracken, ewes that are in lamb can lose their lambs after a dog attack. "It destroys the whole flock, it is a complete disaster," he remarked.
He urged people to control their dogs and said while farmers are entitled to shoot dogs worrying their sheep, they don't like doing it.
