Sheep marts: Strong prices all round

Joe Healy

There is no let-up to the mart trade for sheep as strong prices across the board are reported from all sales yards. Hoggets are making up to €74 over their weight. Cull ewes sold to a top of €136 while ewes with lambs at foot made up to €260.

Baltinglass Mart reported an improved trade for the hoggets, with the 48-55kg stock selling for €118-130 each. The 40-45kg lots made €100-115. Ewes with lambs at foot sold for €150-240/unit. Culls sold from €85-120 each.

At Maam Cross, the Blackface ewes in-lamb made €75-95, while the crossbreds sold for €130. Ewes with lambs at foot averaged out at €110. Lambs made €55-120 .

Enniscorthy had a good, firm demand with prices fully maintained for the larger entry of 975 sheep on offer. The butcher and factory hoggets made €62-74 over the weight in a price range of €111-129.

Stores made €55-68 over at €94-109 each. Ewe hoggets made €118-132. Top for ewes with lambs at foot was a high of €260. The rest ranged from this back to €134/unit. Culls made €56-131.

There were smaller numbers of sheep on offer at Mountbellew Mart. Cull ewes were a firm trade, especially for heavier lots. Increased demand for hoggets and ewes with lambs at foot meant that recent strong prices were maintained.

Well-fleshed hoggets made €64-69 over the €1/kg. A limited number of new season lambs sold for €116-120. Cull ewes made €70-136.

Sample prices for ewes with lambs at foot were as follows:
