Sheep marts: Strong performances all round

Joe Healy

The mart trade for all sheep continued to perform very strongly over the past week and even though lamb supplies are picking up somewhat, prices have strengthened with up to, and more than, €100 on top of the €1/kg frequently paid.

Plenty of new season lambs on offer at Athenry Mart yesterday saw the well-finished and well-made lambs make €80-103 over their weight, with a top price of €150 paid for 47kg lambs. Good hoggets sold for €75-80 over the €1/kg.

Down south, lambs at Fermoy Mart sold for €80-91 over the weight and hoggets made up to €82 over. Cull ewes made up to €155 each at Mountbellew Mart. Ewe hoggets with twin lambs at foot sold for up to €235, while hoggets with singles made €182. Older ewes with strong single lambs at foot fetched €175/unit. Spring lambs made up to €91 over the weight and hoggets around 50kg sold for €68-73 over.

Enniscorthy had 1,900 sheep on offer, with prices up by €3-5/hd on last week. New season lamb prices ranged from €125-140/hd, while butcher and factory hoggets made €75-86 over in a price range of €120-140.

Prices for ewe hoggets ran from €130-145 and the top price for cull ewes was €153, while prices for ewes needing further feeding were down as far as €60/hd.

Ewes with twin lambs at foot made €160-215, while ewes with single lambs sold for €120-167/unit. Hoggets with twin lambs made a top price of €237.

Blackface ewes made from €65-95 at Maam Cross. Crossbred ewes sold at prices up to €130/hd. Ewes scanned in lamb made €105-125. Lambs and hoggets made €75-120. Ewes with twin lambs at foot fetched prices up to €181/unit.

Hoggets weighing 45-50kg made up to €140/hd in Baltinglass with the lighter 40-45kg hoggets selling for up to €125/hd. Cast ewes sold for prices up to €120/hd. A lively trade for ewes with lambs at foot saw those with twin lambs make up to €230/unit, while ewes with single lambs sold to €180/unit.
