Sheep marts: Steady tone to trade across the marts
There is no great change to the sheep trade at the marts with almost all reporting steady prices. A few extra ewes with lambs at foot or in-lamb are appearing and there seems to be a lot of interest especially for the better quality types. Nice ewe lambs attracted good prices around the country also during the week.
Well-fleshed lambs at Athenry yesterday were making €54-62 over their weight with lighter lots selling for €43-53 over.
Down in Fermoy, lambs sold to a top price of €120 for 58kgs with the good quality lamb generally selling for €53-66 over the €/kg. Store lambs made €45-55 over.
Trade held firm at Maam Cross. Lambs sold from €55-105. Mountain ewes sold to €95 with the cross breds selling from €115-135.
Baltinglass had their first ewes with lambs of the season and they met with a very strong trade with three- and four-year-old ewes with twins making up to €225/unit. Ewes with singles made up to €170/unit. Ewes scanned in-lamb and carrying singles and doubles made up to €135/hd.
The 40-50kg lambs were selling for €48-55 over their weight. Stores made €30-55 over. Prices for the fleshy cull ewes ran up to €80.
Dowra had 750 sheep on offer with trade described as steady. The best of the store lambs sold for €70-95 with lighter types selling for €55-70. Prices for good quality ewe lambs ranged from €100-130. Hoggets in-lamb were making €130-160 each. Ewes with lambs at foot made from €150-200 while ewes in lamb sold from €120-180.
A good turnout of sheep with prices holding firm was the report from Mountbellew mart. Ewes with lambs at foot met with an excellent trade while stags were improved slightly. Lamb prices ranged from €45-55 over the €/kg to a top price of €107 for 52kg. A larger number of stag ewes saw prices range from €85-115. Sample prices for ewes in-lamb and with lambs at foot were as follows: five second crop ewes on point of lambing €170 each; two second crop ewes with four lambs at foot €240 each; five hoggets due to lamb next week €130/hd, while two second and third crop ewes with two lambs at foot made €175 each.
