Sheep marts: Signals mixed at marts

Joe Healy

Mixed signals were coming from the sheep marts as some reported significant improvement to prices while others were of the opinion that trade was under a bit of downward pressure over the past week.

Ewes with lambs at foot or even scanned in-lamb met with good demand and sold to €258.

Fermoy had a good trade yesterday. Lambs of 48-64kg sold for €59-73 over the weight.

In Athenry yesterday, good lambs sold for €68-76 over the €/kg. Ewes with twin lambs at foot made up to €240 while in-lamb hoggets made €140. Prices for fat cull ewes hit a high of €136. Ewes for further feeding sold from €40 up.

Scarce supplies resulted in a much improved trade in Enniscorthy. Butcher and factory hoggets were up €10/hd and were €111-130, which reflected €62-75 over their weight. Stores made €56-67 over and sell for €93-108. Ewe lambs sold for €115-133. Top for ewes with lambs at foot was €258. Other units sold back to €133 while cull ewes made €59-134.

Mountbellew had a smaller number of sheep on offer to the previous week. Hoggets and cull ewes met with a slightly easier trade. Ewes with lambs at foot and in-lamb ewes met a strong trade. Factory hoggets made €47-61 over while the store lambs sold for €45-55 over. Prices for the culls varied from a high of €110 back to €64.

Hoggets made €62-70 over at Tullow to sell for €107-122. Stores made €38-56. Fat ewes made up to €113 while ewes for feeding sold back to €54. In-lamb ewes made €115-195.

Stock numbers were quiet at Maam Cross. Lambs sold from €68-95. Blackface mountain ewes with lambs at foot made €75-111 while those scanned in-lamb made €60-85 each.
