Grant aid for repairs to farm buildings urged

Much of the growth in farm construction this year can be attributed to new farm building grant schemes announced by the Department of Agriculture.

Grant aid should be made available under TAMS for the refurbishment of older farm buildings.

ICSA sheep chairman John Brooks warned that some older buildings on farms could now be considered a hazard.

"Design-wise these buildings are sound but do require upgrading as many have become perilous over time; the situation has now become grave and needs to be tackled urgently," said Mr Brooks.

"There is a particular danger where galvanised roofs are concerned, where sheets can become dislodged during bad weather. There is also the ever-increasing danger of falls through these roofs, which is again due to the weakening of these structures over time."

Mr Brooks made his case to Agriculture Minister Michael Creed at a meeting with the minister and department officials in Dublin in recent days.

He said farm safety must be paramount and this would go some way towards minimising the dangers associated with farming activities.

Mr Brooks said TAMS would be the best way to address this.
