Temperatures to drop as low as -3 this weekend (snow on high ground)

Temperatures will drop to as low as -3 this weekend cold and unsettled weather set to grip the country this weekend.

Met Eireann says there will be rain at first tonight in the northeast (with snow over high ground) and staying cloudy; elsewhere clear spells tonight.

Scattered heavy showers will spread from the Atlantic overnight and some of these will be of hail and sleet with a risk of isolated thunderstorms.

A cold night is also forecast with frost and icy patches forming as temperatures drop between -2 and +2 degrees.


Met Eireann says Saturday will be a cold day with sunny spells in all areas (the cloud in the northeast will clear in the morning).

It says scattered passing showers, some of hail or sleet, will occur also with some heavy and possibly thundery downpours.

On Saturday night showers are forecast to retreat to the coastal fringes to give a largely dry night with clear spells.

Met Eireann says frost and fog will clear on Sunday to give a cool, bright day, with sunny spells, but there will be some showers about too.

These of rain and hail and mainly in Atlantic coastal counties.

Overnight, lowest temperatures ranging -2 to +1 degrees, but becoming milder later in the night with the rain.
