In Pictures: Has the bog ever looked this amazing?
Our photographer captures stunning images of annual turf harvest
Williamstown bog in Co Westmeath is a hive of activity at this time of year.
The privately-owned bog, stretching about two miles over raised and low-lying bogland, provides almost 100 people from the parishes of Moyvore, Milltown, Ballynacargy, Abbeyshrule, Ballymore and further afield with vital fuel for winter.
The turf, cut and spread along banks in May and footed in June is currently being drawn out by trailer-loads as locals scurry to beat a break in the weather.
But bringing home the turf is about more than long days and back-breaking work. It is a culture, a tradition, a social activity that has been handed down for generations. It is a custom that reflects a sense of pride of place.
