Gardai are appealing for information in relation to the theft of around 20 gates from farms in Co Laois.

The thefts occurred along the road in Ballinaslee, Attanagh near Durrow in the early hours of Friday morning.

Gardai are appealing to anyone with information or who may have noticed anything suspicious to contact Gardai in Portlaoise on 057 8674100.

The thefts occurred in the same week as a tidy towns display plough was ripped out of its setting in neighbouring Co Offaly.

The plough, which had been used to decorate a green space at Moores Cross in Walsh Island for the past ten years, was taken on Tuesday night.

Local Councillor Eddie Fitzpatrick praised the work of the Walsh Island development group. "They just want to keep the place right.

They do great work," he remarked. He said it was "amazing" what people
will steal.

"You just wonder who wants a plough like that," he added.

Walsh Island Development Group posted on Facebook to say: "The Plough
was green in Colour and was there for at least 10 years, it was welded
into the ground so it even puzzles me how someone could steal it".

Anyone with information in relation to the plough can contact Tullamore Garda station on 057 9327600.
