Investigation underway as overnight blaze causes 'substantial damage' to farm

Garda have preserved the scene of an overnight fire at a farm in Quarrymount, Killeigh, Co Laois.

A Garda spokesman said "substantial damage" was caused to machinery and equipment in a shed during the blaze which broke out between midnight and 1am. 

The scene of the fire is being preserved pending a forensic examination.

Gardai are appealing for anyone with information to contact Gardai in Portlaoise on 057 867 4100.

Meath Crop fire

It is the second farming related fire to be investigated by Gardai in as many weeks.

In a separate incident about a third of a Meath farmer's field of barley was damaged by a fire last week.

The crop was found to be ablaze and the alarm was raised and the local fire brigade attended the scene and put the fire out.

The field located on Church Rd in Johnstown was planted with a crop a barley which was coming close to harvesting.

Navan Gardai are understood to be investigating the fire which they say was started in the crop in ‘suspicious circumstances’.

They have appealed to the public for help identifying any of the suspects involved.
