50-year-old Cork man becomes the 20th farm death this year
Gardai have confirmed that a 50-year-old man has died in a farm accident in the Schull area of Co. Cork.
Gardai were informed of incident on last weekend on a farm, where it is understood the man fell through a roof he was working on and died at the scene.
The Health and Safety Authority is investigating the incident.
This is the 20th farm fatality to happen on Irish farms this year. Three farmers in the Munster area have died in separate farm accidents in recent weeks.
Farmers are eight times more likely to die in a farm accident than any other occupation and figures from the Health and Safety Authority show that working with machinery and animals are the two main causes of deaths on Irish farms.
On average, 19 people are killed on Irish farms every year, making farms the most dangerous work places in Ireland.
There has been almost 200 farm fatalities in the last decade.
