Rugby club sets the Leinster record for land prices this year

Jim O’Brien

North Kildare Rugby Club is no pushover, be it in the scrum or in the post-auction negotiating room.

After what auctioneer Eamon O'Flaherty of Property Partners Brady, Maynooth described as "lengthy and protracted negotiations", the club paid €220,000 -- or a record €23,157/ac -- for 9.5ac of land adjoining its grounds at The Maws, Kilcock, Co Kildare.

The private treaty deal has set the 2012 record for land prices in Leinster. The property was offered for auction earlier this year and was withdrawn at €192,000.

Mr O'Flaherty describes the land as being of excellent quality situated just over 2km from Kilcock, on the Maynooth Road.

North Kildare Rugby Club intends to expand the club playing facilities onto the lands. There were two other parties interested in the lands, both described as "hobby-farmers".

Eamon O'Flaherty was very happy with the result. "Firstly, I am delighted with the strong sale price on behalf of my client but I am also delighted that North Kildare Rugby Club has acquired the lands given their great tradition and history. Hopefully this land will assist them in their future developments."
