Ringside will make disappointing reading this week for farmers hoping for positive movement on cattle prices.

Apart from the heavy heifers and the light weanling bulls, every other weight group and category showed a reduction in prices. In the main the steers were down by 2-10c/kg. Lots up to 500kg made from 180-240c/kg.

Steers between 500-600kg made from 175-220c/kg while heavier lots moved at 170-205c/kg. Lesser quality types made from 130-150c/kg.

Heifers under 500kg ranged from 200-240c/kg. The 500-600kg lots sold for 190-225c/kg which was a drop of 7-9c/kg.

Heavier heifers were up by 2-18c/kg and made from 200-245c/kg. Poorer types sold for 165-175c/kg.

In the weanling sales the light bulls were making from 220-295c/kg which was an improvement of between 4-12c/kg.

Bulls over 300kg sold for 210-260c/kg while plainer bulls sold for 155-176c/kg.

Weanling heifers were back by as much as 28c/kg. Up to 400kg, the prices ranged from 225-275c/kg.

Heavier lots experienced a drop of 14-28c/kg and sold for 210-240c/kg. The dairy bred and poorer quality types ranged from 185-199c/kg.

Numbers of weanlings are up each week at Ennis mart. where trade is holding very firm.

Heavy bulls made from €1.85-2.74/kg, 300-400kg from €1.45-2.90/kg and lighter bulls under 300kg from €1.96-3.06/kg. Heifers over 400kg made from €1.80-2.77/kg, 300- 400kg from €1.82-2.82/kg and lighter heifers under 300kg from €1.78-2.92/kg. Suckler cows with a calf at foot made up to €1,600.

Carnew had a bigger sale with 950hd on offer including a large entry of bulls which met with a very strong export demand. BB bulls hit a high of €3.55/kg. Beef and forward store bullocks sold for €500-850 over their weight. Stores made from €340-700 over.

There was a big variation in prices for the weanling bulls with the top lots making up to €1,020 with their weight while lesser types sold back to €450 over.

Balla had a special weanling sale of U and R grades. The light bulls were selling for €1.53-2.93/kg. Stronger lots sold for €1.86-2.53/kg. The heifer weanlings made from €1.86-2.95/kg.

Store bullocks up to 400kg were making up to €680 with their weight or €1.42 to 2.83/kg. Heavier steers were selling for €1.51 to 2.60/kg.

Heifers were a good all round trade with Northern buyers interested in lots suitable for breeding.Light heifers under 400kg made from €1.18-3.42/kg.

The 400hd at Ballinakill mart met with a quieter trade all round. A lot of cattle were 30 months or older. Younger and fancy cattle were still exceeding €2.00/kg. Heavy steers were selling for €1.70-2.10/kg.

Bullocks were making from €300-625 over their weight 
at Ballymote mart. Heifers under 400kg made from €310-530 over. Lots between 400-500kg were making from €375-550.
