Prices up €10-40/hd at marts as bull weanlings meet very strong demand
Most marts reported price increases of €10-40/hd during the past week. Quality bull weanlings met strong demand from exporters and farmers, with prices from €2.70/kg up to and over €3/kg.
The majority of well-fleshed cattle sold for €2-2.50/kg. Continental stores made €2.10-2.50/kg, with top quality lots exceeding this and plainer stores selling back to €1.60/kg. Heavy cull cows made up to and over €2/kg. Store cows generally made €1-1.70/kg. In-calf suckler heifers made from €1,300/hd up to almost €2,000 for the top quality types.
Bull weanlings met a flying trade at Kilkenny Mart, selling for €2.05-2.55/kg. Bulls of 300-400kg made €2.25-2.90/kg and light Friesian bulls sold to €1.66/kg. Stronger heifers of 300-400kg sold for €2.05-2.45/kg, with lighter lots making €1.90-2.75/kg. Heavy steers sold for €1.85-2.46/kg or €550-1,050 over the weight. Forward stores made €1.80-2.40/kg. Stores of 400-500kg sold for €1.70-2.65/kg, while lighter types made €1.60-2.80/kg or €300-630 over. Well-fleshed heavy heifers sold for €2-2.43/kg, with butcher types making €1.70-2.30/kg. Store prices sold for €1.70-2.50/kg. Continental cull cows sold for €1.45-2.06/kg. Friesian cull cows made €0.80-1.70/kg.
Prices at Balla Mart increased on Saturday, particularly for heavy stock and good quality stores. Heavy steers and heifers sold for €1.55-2.91/kg. The best store heifers and bullocks made as much as €2.67/kg and €3.20/kg respectively, while plainer types in both categories sold for as little as €1.62/kg. Cull cow prices topped out at €1,800 and the top suckler cow price was €1,920.
Light weanling bulls sold for €1.83-3.48/kg, while heavy lots sold for €1.89-3.06/kg. Heavy heifers sold for €1.86-2.93/kg and lighter types made €1.43-3.43/kg.
Bull weanlings at Carnew Mart sold for €330-850 with their weight. Heifers sold for €280-705 over. Prices improved by €20-30/hd in the main cattle sale, where beef and forward store bullocks sold for €350-850 over the €/kg. Fleshed heifers sold for €550-980 over the weight. Store heifers made €350-650 over. Cull cows for further feeding made upwards of €200 with their weight, while heavy fat types sold for up to €850 over.
At Ballinakill Mart, store heifer prices increased by €10-30/hd, with a few exceptional lots making €2.80/kg. Heavy bullocks traded for €2-2.55/kg. Forward stores made €1.80-2.65/kg and weanling bulls moved at €1.90-2.70/kg. In the heifer section, beef types sold for €2.00-2.45/kg and stores made €1.75-2.80/kg. Weanlings sold for €1.60-2.40/kg.
Trade at Ballymote Mart was strong in all sections, but particularly for quality forward store heifers and bullocks. Light steers under 400kg sold for €350-650 with the weight. Heavy types sold for €420-790 over or up to €2.49/kg. Heifers under 400kg sold for €300-635 over the €/kg, while heavier lots sold for €400-900 over.
Suckler heifers traded at €1,210-1,420/hd. Store Friesian cull cows sold for €250 under their weight up to €150 over. Finished continental types made €300-705 over the weight. Bull weanlings of 200-300kg sold for €350-500 over and lots of 300-400kg made €380-830 over. Heifers under 300kg sold for €250-515 with the €/kg. Lots of 300-400kg sold for €325-655 over.
Dowra Mart had 645 cattle on offer on Saturday, where heavy bullocks made €1.90-2.40/kg and lighter stores making from €1.70-2.70/kg. Weanling bulls sold for €1.80-2.40/kg for heavier lots and €2-3.65/kg for lighter lots.
Forward store heifers suitable for breeding made €1.80-2.80/kg. Lighter store heifer sold for €2-2.70/kg. Weanling heifers sold for €1.80-3.30/kg. Better cull cows made €1.70-2.15/kg.
Older thinner cows sold for €0.80-1.60/kg.
