Prices remain strong with fall in numbers at many marts

While numbers seemed to be smaller at quite a few marts the prices remained as strong as ever. Good quality ewe lambs ranged from €120 to €140. Finished lambs sold for a big range from €50-69 over the €1/kg.

Stores sold from €60 to €98/hd. Heavy cull ewes made from €110 to €135, while feeders sold for €50-100. The tops of the ewe hoggets were selling up to €180, with older breeding ewes generally selling for €120-160.

Sales at Athenry and Fermoy yesterday were much smaller than recently. Prices were good with the tops over the weight of €66 and €69 respectively. The well-fleshed lambs over 50kg from the 250 sheep on offer at Fermoy Mart were making €55-69 over the weight. Lambs of 40-50kg were selling for €50 to €60 over.

In Athenry, the better lambs sold for €53 to €64 over the €1/kg, with ewe lambs making up to €66 over.

Prices appeared to be steady during the early part of the sale at Kilkenny Mart, with the general run of fleshy lambs selling for €50 to €60 with their weight. Stores were making €47-59 over the €1/kg.

Trade at Enniscorthy Mart was good, with the recent strong prices holding firm for the 2,000 sheep on offer. Butcher lambs were selling for €55-60 over in a price range of €102-114. Factory types sold for €97-106 or €50-57 over the weight. Stores made €77-95/hd. Good demand for ewe lambs drove prices to a range of €110-140. Cull ewes for feeding made €50-88. Fat ewes made €100-134.

Dowra Mart had 1,300 sheep on offer. Trade for the store lambs was easier and they made from €70-90. Plainer and mountain stores sold for €50-70 each. The best of the ewe lambs were selling from €100-120 each, while a few pens of ewe hoggets made from €120 up to a top of €180. Heavy cull ewes sold from €70-110. Ewes for feeding made from €45-65 each.

Prices were very similar to the previous week for the 2,500 sheep at Carnew Mart, with strong farmer demand for ewe lambs which made from €80-133/hd or €50-82 over the €1/kg. Butcher and factory lambs sold for €50-57 over, with store prices ranging from €71-96/hd. Heavy cull ewes made €95-127. Lighter culls sold for €65-92.

Smaller numbers of sheep reported from Mountbellew, with increased demand for store lambs, factory and ewe lambs. The top price for the ewe lambs was €124. Well-fleshed lambs were making €50-60 over the €1/kg. Store lambs ranged in price from €75-98. Prices for the cull ewes ranged from €78-128. Ewe hoggets sold for €140-180. First crops made €130-175, with older breeding ewes selling for €100-155.

Tullow had 1,260 sheep on offer. A good trade saw the finished lambs sell for €50-63 over their weight. Stores made €37-56 over, while ewe lambs made as high as €131. Cull ewes ranged from €62 to €123/hd.

Small numbers with a steady trade was the report from Baltinglass Mart. The 45-50kg lambs sold from €97-118, while the 40-45kg lots made €80-90/hd. Stores ranged from €60-85. Culls were making €65-110, with the older ewes suitable for another crop of lambs sold for €90-125. Breeding rams made €120-250.
