Prices hold despite downward squeeze

The sheep trade appeared to hold steadier than expected at the marts over the past week, given the downward pressure coming from the factories on prices.

Ewe hoggets made up to €137. Cull ewes with flesh were making up to and more than €100 each while ewes with a lamb or lambs at foot were selling for anything from €100-250 with mountain types and a single lamb going for less. Fleshed lambs fit for slaughter were generally selling for €45-55 over the €/kg. Top quality lambs were making a bit more while plainer types were as low as €40 over.

Fermoy had 350 sheep at their sale yesterday. Trade was firm with the heavier lambs selling for €49-59 with their weight. The 40-46kg lamb was making from €42-53 over.

Prices for lambs at Athenry mart ranged from €40-53 over the €/kg. Carnew mart had 750 sheep at their sale. Prices were steady. Butcher lambs sold for €95-102 with factory types making from €87-97. Prices for ewe hogget's ran from €100-137. Cull ewes made €65-95 while ewes with lambs at foot sold for €130-245.

Numbers were smaller than normal at Mayo/Sligo mart. The trade for the lambs was pretty much on par with the previous week. Ewe hoggets for breeding made up to €100/hd. Other hoggets sold from €70-90. Mountain ewes with a pair of lambs were selling for up to €100 each while ewes with a single lamb at foot made from €65-90. Culls ranged from €35-75 each.

At their liveweight sale on Wednesday the lambs were making €2.05/kg lw with a minimum weight of 40kg

Spring lambs made up to €100/hd at Baltinglass mart. Ewes with lambs at foot sold to €200/unit. Prices for cull ewes ranged from €60-90.

The sheep trade was steady at Dowra mart on Saturday with prices slightly improved from the previous week for some stock. Ewe hoggets made from €100-130 for pens suitable for breeding while the other hoggets were selling for €65-85.
