Pope critical of food waste
The Pope has denounced the culture of food waste in modern consumerism, comparing it to stealing from the poor.
Speaking at his weekly audience in St Peter's Square, Pope Francis said that "throwing away food is like stealing from the table of the poor and the hungary".
A UN report found that one-third of the food produced in the world is lost or wasted every year.
This is the equivalent of 1.3bn tonnes, despite the fact that malnutrition and nutritional deficiency still affects more than 2bn people today.
The same report states that better storage and reducing portion size would greatly reduce the amount of waste produced annually.
