Poor week for cattle as most weight groups and categories suffer at marts

Ringside shows that the past week was not a good one for the cattle trade at the marts around the country, with almost every weight group in every category showing a drop in price compared to the previous week. Steers were back by 2-10c/kg.

The lighter lots were selling for 195-255c/kg, with the 400-500kg lots making from 180-240c/kg. Heavier types made from 170-215c/kg.

Plain bullocks sold for 130-145c/kg. Heifers up to 500kg were selling for 200-245c/kg in the main. Heifers over 500kg made from 195-225c/kg. Lesser quality types sold for 175-180c/kg.

Heavy weanling bulls sold well in a range of 215-290c/kg. Lots under 400kg were making from 195-265c/kg. Plainer bulls made from 120-170c/kg. The weanling heifers were in short supply but those offered for sale generally made from 200-280c/kg while the poorer quality lots moved at 180-190c/kg.

Continental bullocks between 500-625kg were commanding prices of €1.90-2.35/kg at Mayo/Sligo Mart. Bull weanlings of 260-500kg made from €2.00-2.80/kg. Coloured heifers varied from €2.00-2.62/kg while the weanlings made from €2.20-2.80/kg.

The tops of the cull cows peaked at €1,440. The sucklers hit a high of €1,805. Continental suck calf prices ran from €230-395.

Numbers were back at Ennis Mart, but trade was still fairly good all round. Store bullocks met a strong trade with the 450-550kg two year-olds still highly sought after. Heavy steers made from €1.76-2.27/kg, stores from 450-600kg sold from €1.80-2.69/kg, with lighter stores under 450kg making from €1.80-2.76/kg.

Heifers were steady but quality was back a bit on the previous week. Beef heifers sold for €2.05-2.45/kg, with stores moving at €1.80-2.60/kg. There was a big sale of cows. Continental cows sold from €1.55-2.10/kg, with Friesian cull cows making from €0.95-1.72/kg.

At their weanling sale the heavy bulls made from €1.85-2.68/kg, while the 300-400kg bulls sold for €1.45-2.88/kg. Lighter bulls under 300kg made from €1.96-2.92/kg. Heifer weanlings were also a strong trade.

Heifers over 400kg made from €1.80-2.68/kg, 300-400kg from €1.82-3.06/kg and lighter heifers under 300kg from €1.78-2.95/kg. A big sale of suckler cows, that included a clearance sale, met a strong trade. Cows with a calf at foot made up to €1,880.

Calf numbers were back on last week with quality calves again meeting with keen interest. Hereford calves sold up to €385, Belgium Blue calves to €410, and continental calves to €575.

Top class bulls over 600kg at Raphoe Mart were making from €520-610 over the weight. Store bullocks sold for €395-628 with their weight.

Beef heifers moved at €510-895 over the €/kg while the stores made from €300-540 over. Prices for cull cows ranged from €610-1,480 each.

Customers for bullocks were in short supply in Kilkenny where 490 head were on offer. On a positive note, the trade in the heifer and cow ring was a little brighter. Continental cull cows were selling for €1.30-1.95/kg.

Friesian cows made from €1.05-1.60/kg. Fleshed heifers sold for €1.60-2.15/kg. Forward stores moved at €1.70-2.40/kg. Lighter lots made from €1.40-2.65/kg. The heavier steers varied from €1.45-2.20/kg or from €350-650 over their weight. Lots under 500kg were selling for €1.20-2.65/kg or €180-630 over the €/kg.

Firmer

Cull cows at Ballymote Mart were making from €300-440 over the weight. Sucklers made from €1,080-1,450/unit. The best of the forward type weanling heifers were making from €425-505 over.

Carnew had 700 cattle on offer. Forward stores and beef cattle were easier by €20/hd, but all other classes met a firmer trade with the weanling bulls making up to a tops of €3/kilo for quality lots. In general, prices for the bulls ran from €350-800 with the weight.

Forward store and beef bullocks made from €550-850 over. More backward stores moved at €350-720 with their weight. Beef heifers ranged from €450-840 over the €/kg. Stores traded at €280-650 over. Cull cows fit for slaughter made up to €650 with the weight. Lots for further feeding sold back to €100 over.

Trade for the 250hd offered for sale in Ballinakill was reported as similar to the previous week with no improvement in prices. Fancy light bullocks and heifers sold well but plainer sorts were back by €10-20/hd.

Heavy steers made from €1.70-2.20/kg. Lighter lots ranged from €1.70-2.40/kg.

Beef heifers moved at €1.75-2.10/kg. Stores sold for €1.60-2.30/kg. Weanling bulls were selling for €1.70-2.20/kg with the heifers making from €1.50-2.10/kg. Cull cows varied from €1.20-1.80/kg.

Over in Maam Cross the bullocks made from €2.15-2.63/kg, while the heifers ranged from €2.31-3.18/kg. A big variation in the quality of the weanlings on offer was reflected in a price range from €1.60-3.05/kg. Sucklers with a calf at foot sold for €925-1,525/unit. Cull cows made from €1.25-1.75/kg.
