'They are the blue bloods of the Ploughing Championships' - Silence held for tragic Martin Kehoe Jnr

Before the first split, a minutes silence was held before the Senior Conventional final to mark the tragic death of Martin Kehoe Jnr.

His father, champion ploughman Martin Snr was due to compete yesterday morning and had been on site the previous day preparing.

In the National Ploughing Tent a single candle burnt throughout the day to mark the sombre event.

It was place there by charity Embrace which offer support to families who have lost of a loved one in a Farming accident.

Father-of-three Martin Jr died in the accident in Foulksmills, Co Wexford on Tuesday.

Minister Creed also paid his respects and spoke about the danger of the farming industry.

"It is very sad news," he said. "The Kehoe family are blue bloods in the context of the history of the Irish ploughing championships.

"They represented us internationally. And our sympathies go to family involved in that unfortunate accident. Sadly, this is an area where we face really big challenges."
