Over 100,000 people descended on Screggan near Tullamore for the second day of The National Ploughing Championship on Wednesday.

The weather took a turn for the worse in the early afternoon, but attendee's spirits weren't dampened and Europe's largest outdoor festival ploughed-on (excuse the pun) despite the rain.

Here are a few of day two's standout moments.

1. All-Ireland talk

Mayo have not blown their chance to win a first All-Ireland title since 1951, according to Micheal Ó Muircheartaigh.

Independent.ie spoke to the legendary GAA commentator Ó Muircheartaigh, who believes Stephen Rochford's side has more metal than previous Mayo sides that have fallen at the final hurdle.

2. Tractor Football

Is this the future of football? Probably not. Is it good fun? Definitely.

Independent.ie was introduced to tractor football at today's ploughing championship and we were amazed to see how enthralling it was.

"The thing about Massey Ferguson is that it has a good touch for a big van," said legendary broadcaster Micheal Ó Muircheartaigh, who was commentating on the event.

3. Politicians keeping an ear to the ground

Leo Varadkar, Heather Humphreys, Michael Creed and Micheál Martin were just a few of the politicians who made an appearance on Day Two of the festival.

Both Varadkar and Martin made a quick visit to the Independent.ie tent and shared their views on everything, from Independent.ie's range of farming teeshirts, to Gerry Adam's current situation.

4. An event for all the family

The National Ploughing Championships is one of the most family friendly festivals out there.

Children of all ages flock to the event in their thousands, with exhibitions such as 'Pimp My Pooch' and 'Most Suitably Dressed' keeping all the family in great form.

5. The competition

With around 1,500 exhibitions at The Championships, it is easy to forget that there is also a world class ploughing competition taking place.

Amongst today's competitions was the Senior Conventional Plough, the Senior Reversible Plough and the Farmerette Conventional Plough competitions.
