New Hiltex goes on parade with a chance to win s650 charity ram

The Irish Texel Sheep Society stand at the Ploughing will feature the newly launched Hiltex sheep, a successful cross of the Texel sheep on the mountain, as well as a display of lowland breeding ewe lambs.

For the first time, the Texel society will be raffle a Texel ram lamb worth €650 in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.

The Texel breed has had a very successful year, with the breed coming out on top for ease of lambing in Central Performance Testing (CPT) trials, run by the ICBF LambPlus programme.

"This, combined with the breed's other strong attributes such high worm resistance, prolific lambing, good milk production, high vigour and good grading resulted in a hugely successful sales season," says society secretary Sinead Brophy.

At the premier sale in Blessington, the top price was 6,700gns for the champion from Ronan Gallagher from Co Sligo, while the Raphoe sale top price was 1,550gns for John Greene's champion.

At Ballinrobe, Mr Gallagher's ram lamb achieved 850gns, while the top price at the Roscommon sale went to Wexford breeder Liam Dillon when his shearling ram sold for 700gns.

The Athenry sale also had a very solid trade, with a top price of 1,210gns for a ram lamb owned by Cork breeders A & P O'Keeffe.
