Among the many Salers cattle on show at the Ploughing Championships this week will be a pedigree registered Salers in-calf heifer.

Worth in the region of €1,500, the 19-month-old heifer is to be raffled at the end of the three-day show. Entry to the raffle costs €2 per ticket or €5 for three tickets.

The heifer will be accompanied at the Salers stand by a large display of pedigree cattle and crossbred cattle.

All of the pedigree Salers on show have won at regional shows during the year and will cover all age groups from calves up to mature bulls.

The crossbred cows and calves on display are aimed at helping farmers to see how the Salers breed could be incorporated into their own herds.

Salers breeders and members of the society council would be delighted to answer any questions people may have as the Ploughing is a great chance for people to discuss bloodlines and the merits of the breed.

Meanwhile, the ninth annual Pedigree Salers Show and Sale of male and females will take place in Roscrea Mart, Co Tipperary on Saturday, October 26.

The sale will consist of the usual pedigree registered lots, including maiden heifers from eight months old to in-calf heifers, and bulls from 12 months old.

The Salers National Calf Championships will also take place at the mart on the same day.

The annual crossbreed sale in Gort Mart, Co Clare is scheduled for Thursday, October 24, and is expected to include a large number of top quality breeding females.

The Salers society have recently imported Salers straws from France from the bulls Variegeois (S827), Doudou (S1544), Beguin (S1567) and Onyx (ONN). These can be ordered through the society. For more information, call 0505 42245, email or go to
