Cormac Sheep Scales up for grabs on Texel stand
Visitors to the Irish Texel Sheep Society stand at Ratheniska can not only see the best of the Texel breed on display but also be in with a chance to win a Cormac Sheep Scales.
To be in with a chance of winning, simply text your name and county to 087 3907540. The draw will be held at 3pm on Thursday.
As well as purebred Hiltex ewes and lambs, whose popularity are increasing year on year due to the success of the cross between the Mountain ewe and a Texel ram, members of the society will be present over the three days and will be delighted to meet you and answer any questions or queries you may have in relation to the breed.
Despite the challenging conditions earlier in the year, farmers are continuing to show their confidence in the Texel breed by investing in quality rams.
This year, our Premier Sale in Blessington saw both a pedigree and commercial trade that was the best for many years.
There was a 76pc clearance rate was evident. The average run of prices for the commercial rams was from 300gns to 1000gns with a top price of 1,850gns. Pedigree breeders moved up another gear by paying from 1,000gns to 4,000gns.
Top price paid was 7,000gns for Oberstown Usainbolt to Pat and Barry Farrell of Co Meath. Some 17 rams were sold in excess of 1,000gns with a further nine sold for over 2,000gns.
The society is currently enjoying a surge in membership applications. We are in the process of establishing a Young Texel Breeders Club.
