Connacht Agri putting the frighteners on pests
Connacht Agri Supplies is well known for introducing lots of new, innovative ideas, through invention or sourcing worldwide, to make farming chores easier and faster. It looks like this year will be no different, with the firm set to unveil a number of gadgets in Ratheniska this week.
First up is a new walk behind cubicle sweeper brush with the option of a built-in scraper. It is powered with a Honda GCV 16hp easy-start petrol four-stroke engine. The machine comes with two-wheel drive in forward and reverse gears. The brush is independently powered through joysticks with an on-board hydraulic pump and motor, plus two independent rams for controlling the rise and fall of the brush and the scraper.
This machine comes with full Honda warranty and retails at €3,280 plus VAT.
The second machine from Connacht Agri will also be attractive to anyone with cubicle houses as it is a unit for dispensing the likes of lime or sawdust on cubicle beds. The cubicle lime dispenser is powered with a 24V motor and is made from polypropylene plastic with a stainless steel handle, axle and dispenser. It is capable of covering about 200 cubicles per fill. Other features include puncture-proof wheels, handlebar controls, internal agitator, adjustable directional chute for precise coverage and a 24V charge station with an easy-plug connection. It will retail at €1,250 plus VAT.
The third and perhaps most novel innovation comes from North America after Connacht Agri was inundated with requests from farmers tired of dealing with crows, blackbirds and pigeons eating their crops.
Called the Aircrow inflatable scarecrow (pictured), Connacht Agri's Seamus Hession claims that never before has there been a product this effective for warding off unwanted birds from feedlots and farm sheds.
"Aircrow is the first inflatable scarecrow invention of its kind. It is powered with a 0.5hp motor and uses a lifelike erratic movement that rises 10 feet from floor level, which will harmlessly frighten away most unwanted pests. Aircrow has been proven to frighten away squirrels, birds, deer, geese and even racoons," he said.
While I don't expect to find many racoons in Connacht, I will still be checking out the Aircrow on the Connacht Agri stand on row Q 264 this week.
