Plain cattle harder to sell despite improved weather and smaller sales

Demand holds firm for weanlings and sucklers

Many marts reported smaller sales due to the improvement in weather conditions towards the end of last week. Plainer cattle were proving tougher to move with prices back. Quality types were holding firm, with plenty of demand as the main run made between €1.90 and €2.80/kg.

Good weanlings made up to and more than €3/kg. The heavy bull weanling generally moved at €2.00-2.50/kg. Weanling heifers were making from €1.80 to €2.50 in the main. Cull cows made up to €2,060, while suckler cows with a calf at foot ranged from €1,300 to €2,000.

Kilkenny Mart had reduced numbers of 600hd. Plain cattle were a tougher trade, while quality lots sold to €2.80/kg. Generally the steers over 500kg were moving at €1.90-2.50/kg. Bullocks under this weight were selling for €1.75-2.80/kg. In the heifer section, the beef and butcher types sold for €2.05-2.45/kg or €600-930 over the weight. Stores made €1.90-2.60/kg. Continental cull cows sold for €1.75-2.10/kg, while the Friesian cows moved at €1.30-1.85/kg. Prices for the in-calf suckler cows ran from €1,100 to €1,350. Cows with a calf at foot made from €1,300 to €2,000/unit.

Balla Mart had a big sale of 566 cattle. Quality stock and heifers were a steady trade but the lighter plainer bullocks were back slightly. Heavy steers and heifers were selling for €1.63-2.98/kg. Lighter type steers sold for €1.47-2.90/kg.

Forward store lighter heifers made from €1.89 to €3.22/kg. Suckler cows topped out at €1,510 for a Limousin cow with a heifer calf at foot. Cull cows hit a high of €2,000. Most of the lighter weanling bulls were selling in a range from €1.77 to €3.23/kg, while the heavier lots made €1.80-2.50/kg.

Carnew Mart had a smaller sale with 250 cattle. Demand and prices were similar to the previous week. Beef and forward store bullocks were selling for €650-940 over the weight. Stores made from €320 to €840 over the €1/kg. Beef heifers ranged from €350-720 over. The best of the cull cows made up to €1,040 with the weight. Feeders sold back to €280 over the €1/kg. Weanling bulls sold for €450-930 over their weight.

A very small sale due to good weather was the report from Ballinakill Mart. Good quality cattle met a firm trade but plainer cattle were easier by €10-20/hd. Heavy bullocks were making from €1.90 to €2.70/kg. The forward stores moved at €2.00-2.80/kg, while the lighter lots made from €1.90 to €3.00/kg. The well-fleshed heifers sold from €2.00 to €2.40. The stores made €1.75-2.20/kg. Weanling bulls traded at €2.00-2.70/kg, with the heifers making from €1.80 to €2.30/kg. Prices for cull cows ran from €1.30 to €2.00/kg.

Heifers under 400kg were making from €400 to €470 with their weight at Ballymote Mart. Lots between 500-600kg made from €655 to €720 over. Heavier lots made up to €785 with the €1/kg. Suckler cows with calves at foot sold up to €1,530/unit. Cull cows moved for €400 to €660 over the weight. Bull weanlings made €400-€630 with the €1/kg.

The good heavy bulls were selling for €400-1,010 with their weight up in Raphoe. Beef bullocks made from €345 to €830 over. Stores traded at €250-820 with the €1/kg. Finished heifers were making from €625 to €935 over the weight, with the stores selling for €250-685 over. Cull cows for further feeding sold back to €600, while the heavy well-fleshed lots hit a high of €2,060.

At Enniscorthy Mart the heavy steers made from €800 to €1,020 with the €1/kg. Stores moved for €300-950 over. Beef and butcher heifers ranged from €750 to €1,020 with their weight, with the stores making from €380 to €930 over. Strong weanling bull prices ran from €1,050 to €1,320/hd, while lighter lots made from €800 to €1,050. Cull cows sold for €600-1,580/hd.

At their calf sale, a plentiful supply of customers ensured a good trade, with continental bull calves selling for €300-520. The heifers made from €250 to €470. Hereford and Angus bulls and heifers ranged from €180 to €420. Friesian bull calves made from €150 to €260.

Prices were similar to last week at Mayo/Sligo Mart. Cull cows were making from €1,330 to €1,730, with feeders making from €645 to €1,070. Sucklers with a calf at foot made from €1,050 to €1,700. Heifers over 500kg made up to €825 over the weight. Heavy steers sold to €725 over the €1/kg.
