Overseas support hailed

International riders were honoured by Horse Sport Ireland for their commitment and dedication to the Irish Sport Horse.

Nina Barbour accepted an award on behalf of international three-day event rider Oliver Townsend, who currently has a string of more than 40 event horses in training, almost 50pc of which are Irish Sport Horses. These include Ashdale Cruise Master, the 11yo grey gelding by Cruising that Oliver rode to victory in the 2010 Tattersalls International Horse Trials.

Dermot Forde accepted an award on behalf of international show jumping rider Rich Fellers, whose stable includes a number of Irish Sport Horse show jumpers, including Colgan Cruise (ISH), McGuinness (ISH) and Flexible (ISH).

Speaking prior to the award ceremony, the show jumper said he felt "very fortunate that my career crossed paths with the Irish horse".

Meanwhile, the Bowe family of Kiltealy were presented with an award for their contribution to the Irish Sport Horse industry. Helen Walsh from Naas, Co Kildare, also accepted an award as the breeder of the 18-year-old international event horse and winner of Burghley 2010, Lenamore (ISH).

The last award of the night was the Outstanding Contribution to the Irish Draught Horse award, presented in recognition of the work of the late Pat Gleeson. Pat's wife, Margaret, collected the award on his behalf during a standing ovation.
