There were over 2,500 crimes reported on farms throughout the country during the first six months of 2014.
More up to date statistics on farm crime have been delayed due to a review by the Central Statistics Office on how crime statistics are compiled. Crime statistics for the past year are expected to be published later this month.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that there will be a slight year on year increase in farm crime for the first six months of this year when these statistics become available
FBD, the country's largest farm insurer, has seen a 1pc increase in claims from farmers in the first six months of this year.
The farm crime figures for the first half of 2014 were broken down as follows:
* Vehicle theft - 218
*Theft of farming machinery, equipment - 1,720
* Non-aggravated burglaries - 280
* Diesel thefts - 261
* Livestock theft - 48
* Theft from persons - 6
The 2014 statistics recorded one case of aggravated burglary between January and June.
