Oregon boss makes mark on Irish visit

Bruce Lett

Visiting Ireland recently was Marnix Kuypers, head of Oregon Europe, which is probably one of the best known names in the manufacture and supply of bars and chains for chainsaws.

Mr Kuypers (above), a native of the Netherlands, took up his new role with Oregon's owners Blount six months ago and, at just 45 years of age, has worked for L'Oreal, Belgacom and VFc (textile) across Europe after starting off his career as a chartered accountant.

Oregon is the firm that brought us the PowerSharp, easy-to-sharpen chainsaw chain, which we previewed before last year's Ploughing Championships.

Liffey Distributors, importers of the PowerSharp system, sold out of the product at the event.

From the outset, Mr Kuypers set the goal of doubling the firm's revenue in a five-year timeframe after taking over the reins at Oregon Europe. An expansion of the product range is a key plank in this strategy.

"We basically do everything that cuts and we are well known for chainsaw chains and bars. We also do trimmer line and lawnmower blades but are less known for these," he said.

"Liffey Distributors are a good partner for us in the Irish market, with strong dealers," he said.

Commenting on Kuyper's ambition to equip everyone in Ireland with the Oregon PowerSharp system, I explain that this would probably be relatively easy -- similar to the US where everyone has a gun, everyone in Ireland has a chainsaw.

The Dutchman got the humour ... I think.
