Official lamb quotes break the €5/kg mark as supplies tighten

Official quotes for lambs have broken €5/kg as supplies continue to tighten.

All the slaughter plants have upped their quotes by 10-15c/kg since last week, with at least two factories now quoting €5/kg or higher.

While Kildare Chilling is quoting €5.01/kg inclusive of bonuses and Moyvalley Meats is on €5/kg, unofficial prices suggest that even more is on offer for hard bargaining farmers. The majority of plants are still quoting €4.90/kg plus 5-6c bonus.

The IFA's James Murphy said that a much livelier trade this week had resulted in prices of 515c/kg being paid, with 510c/kg widely available.

Scarce supplies have factories and agents competing vigorously for stock.

Ewe quotes have also increased by 5-15c/kg in some of the main export plants.

Meanwhile, the mart trade was described as "red hot" by one farmer at Athenry Mart yesterday.

Butcher lambs sold to a top price over the €1/kg of €75. This returned €127/hd.
