New sector significant, says SIPTU

A new sector for workers in the agri-business, dairy and meat industry was launched by SIPTU last week.

SIPTU organiser Andrew McCarthy said the launch marked an important milestone in the organisation of workers employed in this vital sector of the economy.

"SIPTU has had a strong presence in the agri-business, dairy and meat industry for close to a hundred years and this new structure should prove to be a very effective vehicle in ensuring that workers in the sector are free from exploitation, victimisation and discrimination and are treated decently and fairly by their employers," Andrew McCarthy said.

He congratulated those elected to the Sector Committee and said he looked forward to working with them in the new structure.

"Workers in the sector will benefit from the reorganisation now taking place within SIPTU and I hope they will be proactive with the union," he told those present at the inaugural general meeting of the sector in Liberty Hall, Dublin.
