New agri degree options

Details of three new joint education initiatives were highlighted at the Teagasc education conference in Dublin Castle last Thursday.

The first group of students to enrol in the BAgrSc (Hons) in Dairy Business at UCD are now in the second year of the four-year course, while a new BSc in Horticulture (Hons) in DCU and a BSc in Sustainable Agriculture (Hons) at Dundalk Institute of Technology will start this September.

Professor Boyle also announced that Teagasc intended to upgrade its flagship Advanced Certificate in Dairying in response to the Food Harvest 2020 report.

Meanwhile, Waterford's William Keane is the 2010 Teagasc Student of the Year after he completed an advanced certificate in Dairy Herd Management at the Teagasc Kildalton College, Piltown, Co Kilkenny.

Mark Trenier, Parisee, Co Cavan, was the first runner-up.
