Montbeliarde Society calls for more pedigree animals

The Montbeliarde Society will occupy spaces in the stands of both Dovea AI and Progressive Genetics at the Ploughing Championships this year, where committee members will be on hand to answer all queries.

Montbeliarde registration numbers have increased this year and there is considerable interest in the breed, according to society secretary Ann Fitzgerald.

She said: "Demand for breeding stock -- both heifers and bulls -- exceeds the number of animals currently for sale.

"As the demand for pedigree registered stock is so high, we would encourage members to let the committee know if they have stock to sell.

"We have a list of people interested in purchasing stock immediately and we also have a number of members with bulls to sell for use in 2012.

"You can find us on the web,"

This year, the Montbeliarde Society has published details of all its members on a county-by-county basis in order to help interested breeders locate their nearest members.

It's been a busy year for the society, which included a large farm walk hosted by Con Murphy on his family farm in Co Kerry.

"Con has a very fine herd of pedigree Montbeliarde cows and a great day was had by members and the general public," she added. "Many thanks to the Murphy family and the AI stations that donated semen straws as prizes for the stock judging competition."

The competition for best herd protein, yields, butterfat and longevity was won by Ivan Buttimer and Richard Austin.

Meanwhile the society has just launched a new fashion 'must have' in time for the Ploughing Championships -- the highly sought after Montbeliarde jacket, which will be on sale at both Montbeliarde stands.
