Mixed trade reported but prices up by €10-40/hd for quality stores

A number of marts reported prices to be up by anything from €10-40/hd over the past week, especially for the quality store cattle. Good quality stores were selling for €2.20-2.80/kg with more paid for top lots. Prices overall were averaging out close to €2/kg. Heavy steers were back a little with prices generally running from €1.75-2.25/kg.

The weanling bulls suitable for export were making between €2.70-3.30/kg with farmers freely paying from €2.20-2.70/kg for the next grade of calf. Reports would suggest that the weanling heifer was a tad back on the previous week. Fleshed heifers made from €2-2.50/kg. Suckler cows are generally making between €1,100-1,500 with top quality younger types hitting up to €2,000. The best of the cull cows made up to €2/kg but in general the run of prices ranged from €1.50-1.90/kg.

Dowra Mart had 760 cattle on offer last Saturday with a continuing strong trade for all classes. Heifers over 550kg made from €2-2.40/kg with a few lots for breeding making up to €2.70/kg. The lighter heifers made from €2-2.50/kg.

Weanling heifers under 300kg sold from €2.20-2.80/kg. Lighter and fancy weanlings under 300kg were making up to €3.20/kg.

Bullocks over 600kg made from €1.90-2.40/kg. Lighter types were making from €2.20-2.65/kg. Weanling bulls over 500kg ranged from €2-2.65 with the lighter weanlings making from €2.20/kg all the way up to €3.30/kg for export lots. Some of the very fancy light calves made up to €3.70/kg.

Balla Mart had over 1,400 cattle on offer and 1,000 weanlings. Prices were very good for the heavy store bullocks which were up €20/hd, while the lighter store was up by between €20-40. The good stores made from €2.20-2.85/kg. Plain types sold back to as low as €1.27/kg. Similarly, the poorer heavy lots moved from €1.27/kg upwards with the top quality lots making as high as €2.75/kg.

Heifers ranged in price from €1.68-2.64/kg. The best of the cull cows hit a high of €1,745 while a three-year-old Limousin suckler due to calf later this month topped out at €1,490.

Carnew had a big entry of 1,050 cattle at their sale last Saturday. Beef and forward store steers were selling for €580-1,020 with their weight. Lighter stores made from €250-840 over the €/kg. Fleshy heifers sold for €520-910 over. Stores made from €320-750 with the weight. The top cull cows were making up to €800 over the €/kg while feeders sold back to €200 over. Bull weanlings traded at €380-900 with their weight. The heifers sold from €280-620 over.

It was a smaller sale than previous weeks at Ballinakill. Trade was good for the quality cattle with the plainer and thinner cattle harder to sell. Heavy bullocks sold for €2.05-2.45/kg.

Forward stores moved at €1.85-2.60/kg. Light stores were selling for €1.75-2.80/kg. Beef heifers made €2.00-2.25/kg with the stores making from €1.70-2.30/kg. Weanling bulls ranged from €1.95-2.55/kg with the heifers making from €1.65-2.25/kg. Prices for cull cows ran from €1.45-1.85/kg.

Bullocks under 400kg were making from €280-575 over the weight at Ballymote Mart.

Lots between 400-500kg made from €350-705 over or up to €2.64/kg. Heavier steers made up to €965 with the €/kg.

Light heifers up to 400kg sold for €250-610 over the weight, which translated into €2.55/kg for the top lots. Plainer heifers between 400-600kg sold back to €300 over. The fancier types made from €600-1,005 with their weight or as high as €2.80/kg. Good heavy heifers made up to €2.51/kg.

Store cull cows were making from €150-250 with the weight. Well-fleshed cows made up to €575 over. Top quality light weanling bulls made from €2.70-3.26/kg.

Prices were reported to be up by €20-50/hd for the smaller than normal sale of 300 head of stock at Enniscorthy Mart. The finished bullocks were selling for €650-1,000 over the weight. Stores were making from €200-900 over.

Well fleshed butcher and factory heifers made from €575-950 with their weight. Stores were making from €300-600 over the €/kg. Strong bull weanling prices ran from €1,100-1,670 or €550-900 over. Cull cows sold from €100-650 with the weight.

At their calf sale, the Continental bulls were making from €350-500. The heifers were selling for €310-430. Hereford and Angus bulls and heifers sold from €210-445 each. Friesian bull calves made from €100-280.

The best of the heavy bulls sold for €400-1,140 over their weight. Beef bullocks were making from €590-890 over the €/kg. Fleshed heifers made from €395-1,190 with the weight.

Stores moved at €250-700 over while the store bullocks made from €300-875 over. Feeding cows sold from €800-1,100 with the finished cows making up to €1,720.
