A top price of €1,580 and an average price if €502/hd was recorded at the Vendeen Sheep Society premier sale in Roscommon last Wednesday.

Thomas Duffy, from Tallagh, Belmullet, Co Mayo produced his ram lamb to perfection to impress Northern Ireland judge and well-known Vendeen breeder Robin Kennedy and secure top place. The ram had a five-star rating for production traits under the Lambplus ratings system and was one of many lambs bought as a result of his €urostar index.

The Reserve Champion spot went to a shearling ram owned by John Lynch, Ballinascraw, Ballinalee, Co Longford.

Over two-thirds of the animals on offer secured new homes, although the bad weather was to blame for discouraging more potential buyers from travelling to Roscommon mart on the day.
