At the recent Agritechnica machinery show, Mayo firm Major Equipment Ltd launched a new topper (right) onto the German market.
However, this is no ordinary topper -- it has been developed to combat the European corn borer that has apparently been steadily spreading in Germany and resulting in serious losses in maize yield.
In place of conventional topping blades, the firm has equipped its 18ft machine with what it describes as 'bullets'. These are heavy-swinging weights, which, Major's managing director, John Murphy, says shred the maize stubble left in the field to eliminate overwintering of the caterpillars in the plant and avoid crop destruction.
It is possible to convert the topper back for conventional use outside of the maize season. There is an optional blade kit available to replace the bullets.
