Stallions gallop to Approved or Preliminary Approved status in Irish Sport Horse Studbook

Last week, we looked at the Irish Draught horses that achieved a Class One rating in the Irish Draught studbook at the Horse Sport Ireland (HSI) stallion inspections.

This week, we examine seven more stallions that were given the Approved or Preliminary Approved rating for the Irish Sport Horse Studbook.

These include Chinook Eclipse (TB), who was Approved, having met the thoroughbred inspection and veterinary requirements.

HSI breeding director Alison Corbally said three stallions impressed the inspectors and the test rider during their ridden assessment and were subsequently qualified for Preliminary Approved status.

These stallions -- Cabriole, Gatsby and Yeats -- passed the Stage Two inspection and will be performance monitored up to the age of 12.

Based on their own performance and that of their progeny, these stallions will either be upgraded to Approved, or downgraded to Not Approved One.

"These stallions represent a good mixture for traditional, well-related Irish bloodlines and quality foreign-bred performance stallions," said Ms Corbally.

Meanwhile, three more stallions -- Radolin, Karical De Khan and Garrison Royal -- were upgraded to Approved status having met the performance or progeny performance requirements.

"This upgrade facility is a feature of the new HSI Approval process and allows stallions that may not have been approved at inspection to be upgraded if they are successful performance stallions or sires of performance horses," said Ms Corbally.

The performance criteria for upgrading to Approved are that the stallion must have jumped four double clear rounds at National Grand Prix or International Level (minimum height 1.40m) or above or the equivalent in eventing or dressage.

Alternatively the stallion must have produced two offspring that have each jumped two double clear rounds at National Grand Prix or International level (minimum height 1.40m) or above or the equivalent in eventing or dressage.
