Livestock trucks dodge levy

Peter Crosskey

Trucks carrying livestock will be exempt from France's new transport levy.

However, empty livestock trucks, whether they are laden with other goods or not, will be liable for the 8-14c/km tax.

The new ecotaxe was due to come into force from the beginning of October but resistance from hauliers has slowed the registration of lorries to the point that French authorities are now planning to push out the start date to January 1, 2014.

Only 10pc of the expected 100,000 were equipped with the required ecotaxe box sets by the end of August.
