The rising price of letting land was very much in evidence in Castlecomer last week when local estate agent Joe Coogan entertained a huge crowd at a letting auction.

A 20ac parcel of grazing ground at Bonnetstown, Co Kilkenny, which last year made €215/ac, was taken at auction by a drystock farmer for €300/ac, an increase of 39pc.

Tillage land extending to 22.5ac at Ballacolla was let to a dairy farmer for maize at a price of €380/ac, an increase of 49pc on last year's price of €255/ac for the same ground.

Also in Ballacolla, a 9.5ac field that last year made €240/ac was let for the coming 12 months for €335/ac.

Meanwhile, 35ac of grazing ground that last year went for €180/ac was this year taken by a beef farmer for €235/ac.
