This is the last picture taken of 29-year-old Cruising, who died at the weekend. By Sea Crest out of Mullacrew, Cruising was bred and owned by the McCann family of Hartwell Stud in Co Kildare.

He won Grand Prix competitions around the world and at home, but his real legacy will be the many jumpers and eventers that he sired. These included Flexible, Mo Chroí, Mr Medicott and Mr Cruise Control.

"We are all heartbroken," owner Mary McCann said yesterday. "He was very much part of our family and it's lovely to know how much he was appreciated by breeders."

Our second photo shows Cruising in action in the 1990s at the RDS with Trevor Coyle.
