Kilkenny duo pay €2m in the west

TWO BROTHERS from Kilkenny gave dairying in the west a real vote of confidence when they paid close to €2m to secure the purchase last week of a 214ac farm near Roscommon town.

Local auctioneer John Early described the farm at Mullymux, Roscommon, as one of the finest holdings to come on the market in the county for many years and this was reflected in the sale price of close to €10,000/ac.

Mr Early said the size of the farm and the quality of the land generated enquiries for the property from across the country but the Kilkenny-based siblings saw off all other interested parties.

It is understood the buyers intend to develop a modern dairy unit on the holding, which has no farm buildings of note. The 214ac was part of a 320ac farm that was originally for sale. It is understood that the purchasers have agreed to take the remaining 106ac on a long-term lease.
