Communities in nine non-Gaeltacht islands are in shock at the news that the Department of the Environment is to terminate core funding to their five Community Development Company Offices at the end of the year.

Islanders are calling on Environment Minister Alan Kelly to reverse this decision and save these vital services on the islands.

According to John Orpen, vice chair of West Cork Islands Community Council, the withdrawal of this funding will mean the collapse of a wide range of activities and initiatives on the islands. The islands affected include Inishbofin, Inishturk, Clare Island, Bere Island, Sherkin Island, Dursey, Whiddy Island, Long Island and Heir Island.
