IGA event pulls in Dukes as keynote speaker

Former agriculture minister and Fine Gael leader Alan Dukes will deliver the keynote address at the Irish Grassland Association's annual dairy conference.

This year's event will take place at Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork, next Tuesday.

Mr Dukes' presentation will outline his views for a successful Irish agriculture and dairy industry.

The conference will also hear from farmers from Tipperary, Waterford, Laois and Cork.

Four farm families will make presentations, which will be followed by technical advice to solve some of the problems posed by farmers on the day.

Laois brothers Paul and David Hyland and Tipperary farmer John Cahalan will address the problems of increasing stocking rates on their farms, while Waterford farmer Tom Barron will deal with the successful treatment of somatic cell counts on his farm.

Cork dairy farmer Michael Murphy is set to return to this year's conference and will outline the key messages he has learned from his recent trip to New Zealand for setting up farm infrastructures.

The conference will also hear from Waterford man and Young Farmer of the Year William Keane, who will speak about how he and his father are planning for the future in developing their farm business.
